Telethon 是結合了 "television"(電視) 和 "marathon"(馬拉松) 的一個綜藝節目，所以顧名思義，它是一個為期不短的電視節目表演，可以為期好幾個小時、長則可以到達好多天。
Jerry Lewis 是美國一個知名的喜劇表演者，他跟 Dean Martin 的搭檔團隊 Martin and Lewis 從 40 年代成立之後，被喻為美國史上最經典的喜劇表演團隊。
而 Jerry Lewis 另一項著名的事情是，他創立了一個慈善募款 telethon 的節目叫做 Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon，他從 1966 年主持到 2010 年(這個節目在 2010 Jerry 宣佈不繼續主持後改名為 MDA Show of Strength)。這個電視節目在每年 9 月的勞工節假期時 LIVE 播放，選在這個時間原因是因為其他的連假許多人都會出去玩，只有勞工節的連假大家會待在家裡看電視、休息。節目長達 20 幾個小時 (在 2011 年縮短為 6 小時、2012 年再減為 3 小時)，有各式各樣的綜藝表演，主要是為了慈善募款，節目播放的同時螢幕下方會出現電話號碼，如果你想要捐款就可以依照你所在的州打電話捐款。
